Areas of heavy, thundery rain will continue to move north across northern England and then over much of Scotland during the course of today. The rain will then clear from the south, although lingering across the far north of Scotland well into the evening. Strong winds are also likely across northeast England later in the morning and then eastern and northern Scotland later.
The public should be aware of the risk of localised disruption, mainly due to surface water flooding.
Chief Forecaster’s Assessment:
An area of low pressure will continue to deepen as it tracks north across northeast England this morning and then to the east of Scotland this afternoon. This will bring some strong winds to land areas in northeast UK and also gales, locally severe gales, to sea areas on the southern flank of the low. Meanwhile, heavy rain will occur at times across much of northern England and Scotland for a time today, with some short duration torrential rainfall in places. Although rainfall amounts will vary considerably, there is scope for 20 to 40 mm of rain to fall widely and up to 75 mm in some areas.
