Met Office Issues Yellow Weather Warning – Wind

Issued at: 10:24 on Wednesday 18 November 2015

Valid from: 14:00 on Wednesday 18 November 2015

Valid to: 03:00 on Thursday 19 November 2015

Southwesterly gales will become severe in exposed areas during Wednesday afternoon and evening. Gusts of 50-60 mph are likely over coasts and more exposed inland areas with gusts of 60-70 mph possible around the coasts of western Scotland and the north coast of Northern Ireland. The winds will veer westerly in the evening before easing from the west in the early hours of Thursday. Heavy, blustery showers or some longer spells of rain could also lead to some surface water flooding on the roads especially over parts of western Scotland.

Be aware of difficult driving conditions and the risk of some minor travel disruption on roads and to ferries.

This is an update to the warning to slightly delay the start time and to include more of northern England.

Chief Forecaster’s Assessment

An Atlantic depression will move east across northern Scotland on Wednesday, bringing a swathe of strong winds on its southern flank affecting southern and central Scotland as well as parts of Northern Ireland and northern England. Frequent showers or some longer spells of rain may lead to some localised surface water flooding, given the very wet state of the ground.
