Southwesterly severe gales are expected at times during the rest of Saturday before winds start to ease during the early hours of Sunday. Highest gusts are likely over higher ground where gusts close to 80 mph are possible. Meanwhile, to the east of higher ground gusts are may locally reach 60 to 70 mph.
Please be prepared for the likelihood of travel disruption on roads and to rail and ferry routes. Winds may be strong enough to bring down trees and perhaps cause damage to buildings and other structures. A period of heavy rain will also affect parts of the area, for which separate warnings are in force.
Chief Forecaster’s Assessment:
The very strong west to southwest airstream across much of the UK will strengthen during Saturday afternoon. Whilst the highest gusts are expected over higher ground, some potentially damaging gusts may also be experienced to the lee of high ground.
